Birmingham Institute of Art and Design

This heavily trafficked area of the Birmingham City University's Parkside building needed a large mild steel staircase with wide treads to meet the demands of the buildings use.

This large staircase winds up to the fourth floor of the Parkside building and has over length treads to enable numerous passengers to use it simultaneously. A timber handrail and painted board finish maintain form and function.

Construction

Mild steel forms the carriage of this staircase and the tread and risers are folded from the same. D Wilson designed the timber handrails and incorporated the downlights openings off-site to minimise any on-site delays. A durable vinyl matting is used for the walkways and all metal work is covered.

Finish

This staircase presented the chance for our design and finishing team to focus on the end user requirement and tailor a solution which would withstand a large volume of traffic on a daily basis. A timber based finish was chosen as it is the easiest and most cost-effective material to maintain.
